Jewelry Cleaning

I may have posted about this in the past, but it’s worth re-hashing. 🙂

A dear friend… it was Miss Connie (our bass player), as it so often is… gave me this great tip on cleaning jewelry. In fact, when I’ve stayed at their place, she has often cleaned my ring for me!

This method works really well, for an at-home job.

All you need is:

  • Mug
  • Water
  • Dish Soap/Detergent (I use Dawn)
  • Soft-Bristle Toothbrush

Heat the water and dish soap until boiling. This is can take a minute or less in the microwave…

Carefully drop the jewelry into the hot water mixture. Let it soak for a few minutes. Remove the jewelry (being careful not to burn yourself, if it’s still hot), and gently scrub with the toothbrush. Rinse, and let air dry.

Now the question… Where would y’all recommend taking jewelry for an occasional check-up/cleaning job? I’d like to find a trustworthy place that could do my ring, as well as Mama’s engagement ring, and other valuables.

Go into a nice jewelry store and look around at different things you may be interested in. Ask the jeweler to clean your ring. They are always happy to do this service for you. Most of the time they just volunteer. They also sell a gem and jewelry cleaner which is about the size of a cup. Just put your jewelry in the basket inside and shake (directions on the container). It has a small brush to use if there is something that needs to be dislodged. I always take my rings off when I am cooking and cleaning which keeps them from getting too dirty. 🙂

Thanks, Grammy! I often take my ring of if I’m going to do something particularly dirty… But, I’m so afraid I’ll lose it! Argh. I do hope to get it professionally cleaned/checked soon, though. I want to make sure it’s well cared for. 🙂
