“Mrs.” (pronounced “Missez”)
This is a title reserved especially for married women. There are some modern variants on this subject, but I prefer the following (using the name “Linda Smith” as an example):
When addressing her directly, you can say, “Mrs. Smith”.
When addressing her formally (especially on a letter), you can say, “Mrs. John Smith” – using her husband’s first name, followed by their last name.
I do not see that “Mrs. Linda” is ever appropriate. In some ways, you could think of “Mrs.” as meaning “Married to”. So, “Mrs. John Smith” essentially says, “Married to John Smith”.
