As I mentioned in the last post, my siblings and I had many (MANY) hours on the road when we were little. But, that van was ready for us on the day of departure. In our windows hung fun-filled organizers with pockets full of our entertainment.
Though our organizers were homemade, you can find car organizers that strap to the back of the seats (something like THESE, perhaps). These are excellent, as well (though, potentially a bit more difficult for your child to reach). We’ve used this style on more recent trips, in order to help contain/protect our own books, reading glasses, writing utensils, etc.
What sorts of things are good to entertain kids in the car? Try these:
- Workbooks (mazes, coloring pages, mad libs, etc.)
- Coloring Pencils
- Small Pencil Sharpener
- Block Eraser
As a quick side note… Coloring pencils are preferable to crayons in the car. Crayons melt. 🙂
- Books that they enjoy
- Small toys (or “fidgeters” as we sometimes call them)
- Fun Educational Tools (Like THESE wrap-up math facts… We had some almost exactly like them!)
- Hand Work
We learned to crochet at a young age, which was great for keeping little hands busy!
- Travel Journal & Pen or Pencil
We would take journals along with us, and write a summary of each day’s adventures, as well as each day’s spending. It makes for a great handwriting “course”, and even better entertainment years later!
